16-Year-Old Pro Surfer Zander Venezia Dies While Catching A Wave During Hurricane Irma

    What a disaster.

    It’s being reported that 16-year-old professional internet user Zander Venezia passed away on Tuesday while capturing the mega-swell waves in Barbados brought on by Hurricane Irma.

    The Bridgetown, Barbados local was surfing a heavy break called “Box by Box” when he was knocked unconscious and drowned after getting captured by a closeout set that sent him into the shallow, rocky bottom where he struck his head on the reef.

    Former Bajan pro-turned-surf trainer Alan Burke informed Surfcide of the destructive mishap:

    “I’m informed that Zander get reversed by a closeout set, where he likely struck bottom. Nathan Florence got to him initially, then yelled for the other people and began to carry out CPR. Zander was bleeding, and he wasn’t moving. They attempted to get him to the beach rapidly, which was hard. ‘Box by Box’ is a difficult location to obtain in and out of, even if you have the capability. There’s great deals of huge rocks around, and some protrude of the water. When they lastly did get him in, they carried out CPR on the beach. The ambulance came actually quickly from Speightstown, and the entire drive Nathan Florence, Dylan Graves and the paramedics continued to attempt and restore him. When they got him to the healthcare facility, Zander was breathing, however not responsive. From the time Nathan got to him in the water to when they reached the healthcare facility, it had to do with 75 minutes of continuously CPR.”

    Alan included of Zander’s pleasant and enjoyable character:

    “He was among my children’ [Josh and Jacob Burke] buddies, and like a child to me. We simply took a trip the entire East Coast together, surfing that last Outer Banks swell together. Zander was such an excellent, amusing kid. He was constantly joking, and he simply enjoyed browsing. He was so jolly, such a delight to be around. I simply cannot think he’s gone. I’m a mess, guy. We’re all a mess over here.”
